TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

Controller not detected?
Start here.

A practical checklist for Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and generic controllers that do not appear in a browser-based gamepad tester.

QUICK FIXES

Try these in order

  1. Connect or pair the controller in your operating system before opening the tester.
  2. Press any face button or move a stick.
  3. Try a different USB cable or port.
  4. Close Steam, browser games and controller remappers.
  5. Reload the page in desktop Chrome or Edge.
  6. Pair Bluetooth again and check system settings.
WHAT THE PAGE CAN READ

Browser limits

The tester can only display data that the operating system exposes through the standard Gamepad API. A controller can work in a console or native game while remaining invisible to a browser.

  • This page cannot pair Bluetooth or install USB drivers.
  • Some browsers require user interaction first.
  • Vibration support is separate from button detection.
  • Driver and Steam mappings can change button labels.
DETECTION FAQ

Still stuck?

Why does a browser need a button press?+

Browsers commonly expose a connected gamepad after the user interacts with it. Press a face button or move a stick after connecting.

Should I close Steam?+

Steam Input and other controller tools can change mappings or hold the device. Close them temporarily when diagnosing a browser detection issue.
